The Stephen Lawrence Gallery

To-Lo: Tokyo; London art exchange

Klega, Saki Satom, Caroline McCarthy, plus artists in residence Midori Mitamura and Are You Meaning Company. Curated by Saki Satom

Residency: 7th & 18th April
Exhibition open: 22nd April - 16th May 2008
Preview: 6-8 pm Monday 21st April

To-Lo is an international art residency and exhibition, hosted by the Stephen Lawrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich. It constitutes the second leg of an art exchange between Tokyo and London curated by Saki Satom. The first part, entitled "Double Standards", having taken place in Japan at the Tokyo Wondersite between 23rd October and 7th November 2007.

For the residency in Greenwich we are very pleased to be hosting two artists from Japan, of international standing: Midori Mitamura, and Are You Meaning Company. The residency has been supported by a generous donation from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.

The Are You Meaning Company is a one-person operation established in Tokyo in 1999, through which the artist initiates interactive projects, designed to investigate the experience of change at the humdrum level of everyday life.

Midori Mitamura utilises personal and found photographs within installed settings, such that they create ??dramas that the viewer can step into. The work investigates how memories and sentiment, held by groups or individuals, become locked within the photographic image. At the same time, the memory in the viewer is released - a strategy subtly revealing of the tensions between historical account and lived experience.

For both parts of the exchange the focus has been to present a response to the everyday in both cities, where for most of the artists, the view taken has been one of an outsider. Accordingly, in viewing the work generated, we are encountering the bits and pieces of everyday lives through the eyes of the visitor.

In Tokyo, for example, everyday foodstuffs became for Caroline McCarthy the subject of memento mori found in Dutch still lives; while for Klega, chopsticks presented a form that allowed for their extended reconstruction into a three-dimensional drawing.

For Saki Satom, the visit to Tokyo was a return home. Her practice, however, has always sought to investigate socially constructed behaviour from the point of view of an outsider. Her inception of the exchange project and her activity within it is no exception to this.

The work made in Tokyo will appear alongside the work emerging out of the Greenwich residency in the final exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, which previews on Monday 21st April (6-8pm).

A short film programme of Japanese Artists' films including....will be shown at the preview.

JAPANESE CONVERSATION GROUP by The Japan Society

Meets on the First Thursday of every month (except for January - second Thursday) for light buffet, drinks and conversation in Japanese. This becomes easier as the evening progresses, with about 50 attending each session. Starts at 6.30PM with a pay as you go bar, and the evening's themed event is usually between 8.00 and 8.30pm. More drinking and chatting then follow.

* Please note that the Japanese Conversation Group is the only event in the Japan Society to be conducted entirely in Japanese. So that you can fully enjoy the evening, it would be preferable for you to have at least an intermediate level of Japanese; however anyone above beginner's level with a desire to put what they know into practice is welcome.
