10 Reasons To Learn A Foreign Language

Young people in Africa, China, Russia, and other poor and disadvantaged countries clearly know the importance to learning a foreign language, and would welcome the same opportunities that Japanese students are getting. I think that the approach to the teaching of the English language in the Japanese education system needs to be rethought, and hence, the method restructured. I believe a teaching of the English language and its history will create a greater interest and appreciation for the English language. In addition, I feel that teaching the English language through the topics of world poverty, global warming, etc... Is much more interesting and individually rewarding than the mundane topics, which are presented in the English textbooks used in Junior High Schools.
Shari, a regular online blogger and teacher of English conversation living in Japan, comments: "I think affluent and relatively geographically isolated countries don't tend to breed folks who value other languages. The Japanese know that they can get jobs in Japan, which will pay them pretty decently and they know they can travel in package tours where their needs are looked after. They also don't tend to have a great curiosity about deeply understanding other cultures and are relatively content to know what little idiosyncratic information they can pick up via television or other media. 日本人はまた、それほど深く他国の文化に関心がなく、テレビや他のメディアから習得している比較的正しい情報で満足している」 "Kids are worse about this than adults, but the bottom line is that need dictates interest in many cases and the Japanese are rich enough not to feel that need strongly. This isn't something that is isolated to Japan, of course. It's the same in the U.S. Affluence and isolation breed indifference and feelings of cultural arrogance (which both Japan and the U.S. also have) seals the deal." I have read many articles stating that the Japanese are the worst at learning and communicating in a foreign language. Through my experience so far I would have to honestly agree. However, though the Japanese lack in language abilities compared to the rest of the world, that is not to say that the Japanese people are not friendly and nice. They are very lovely people who are always willing to help a fellow citizen or gaijin (foreigner) in time of need. In response to my recent thoughts, I have written a list of 10 reasons why one should learn a foreign language - using both my own input and resources gathered from the Internet.
1. To increase global understanding "A different language is a different vision of life." - Federico Fellini, Italian film director 2. To improve employment potential A richer and wider variety of job opportunities become available. The ability of a foreign language is considered a valuable and strong skill - Barry Crisp 3. To increase native language ability "Those who know nothing of foreign languages, knows nothing of their own." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe In order to appreciate the beauty of ones own language, one must fully explore another - Barry Crisp 4. To sharpen cognitive and life skills "We have strong evidence today that studying a foreign language has a ripple effect, helping to improve student performance in other subjects." - Richard Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education under Bill Clinton Imagine the remarkable opportunities your children and loved ones will have with the ability to communicate in at least one other language. Knowing another language breaks the linguistic and cultural barriers, and truly helps to create the opportunity for one true world citizenship and identity. - Barry Crisp 6. To appreciate international literature, music, art and film There is no finer satisfaction than to be able to understand, explore and appreciate the work of something in a language other than your own. - Barry Crisp The medium language in most (if not all) countries between a native and a foreigner is English. An inability to communicate in a countries' native language or the basics in English, will leave your open to dangerous possibilities. - Barry Crisp 8. To expand study, live and work abroad options "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost, American poet. It is because of my willingness to improve my Japanese ability, and to succeed in this great challenge of living and working abroad, that I am able to do just that - live in Japan. - Barry Crisp 9. To increase understanding of oneself and ones' own culture "As the traveler who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own." - Margaret Mead, American anthropologist "The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway." - Henry Boye, author Having friends from all walks of life and from different cultures, enriches ones' own life's experiences and understanding of the world we inhabit. - Barry Crisp
"To be able to develop the insight of an artist, and the analytical precision of a scientist, and the persuasiveness of a lawyer." Prof. Maureen Moran, Brunel University
