Kimono Recently, people in Japan were blessed with a lovely long weekend off - four days to be precise. This is known as Golden Week, and not surprisingly, which is when you get stuck in traffic jams, get squashed and pressed against on a shinkansen, and of course can not go anywhere to hide for some peace and solitude. Yes, the Japanese flee to common places both home and abroad for the Golden Week period like bees escaping a heavy downpour.

つい最近、日本では多くの人々が大型連休 ( 正確に言うと４日間 )を取りました。この連休はゴールデンウィークとして知られていますが、当然のことながら、この連休の間は至る所で交通渋滞が頻繁に発生し、新幹線はひどく混雑し、そしてもちろんどこかひっそりとした静かな所に身を隠すのさえも難しいでしょう。国内海外共に観光・旅行するのにポピュラーな場所へ多くの日本人が土砂降りから逃げる蜂のようにそれぞれの行き先へ逃れる様が想像できます。

The tanbo (rice fields) are already in birth, their heads reaching out of the water catching the late Spring air. I often take a family bike ride to just appreciate the beautiful natural greenery that surrounds my local area of residence. Summer promises to be another fruitful one here in Chiba. As the tanbo grows, so do I.

今の時期、田んぼの稲はすでに遅めの春の風に吹かれています。地元地域を囲む美しい自然の緑を観賞するために私はよく家族とサイクリングに出かけます。夏もまた千葉では自然を楽しむのにもってこいの時期です。田んぼの稲もそして私もぐんぐん育つ時期なのです。

For Golden Week I went into Tokyo to visit my grandmother in-law. She is a pleasant old woman, who always greets me with an honest smile. From her house I visited downtown Tokyo. It's called downtown Tokyo because it represents the old hub of the high-tech neon-lit city, and there are many buildings that survived the Second World War Air Raids from America. I walked through Yushima, Ueno, Ikenohata, Yanaka, and Sendagi nezu. The journey was relaxing and infused with a refreshing alternative cultural aspect of Tokyo.

ゴールデンウィークの間、私は義理の祖母を訪ねるために東京へ行きました。彼女は会うたびにすばらしい笑顔で私にあいさつをしてくれます。私は彼女の家から東京の下町を目指しました。下町とはこの地域がハイテクなネオンで明るい都市になる前の昔の東京の中心地であったことを意味します。東京では第二次世界大戦中のアメリカからの空襲による損傷を免れた建物を今でもたくさん見ることができます。私は湯島、上野、池之端、谷中そして千駄木のエリアを歩きました。この小さな旅で私は新鮮で新しい東京の姿を発見することができました。

My journey through downtown Tokyo reminded me of my trip to Kyoto three years back. There are beautiful temples darted all around, small backstreet narrow roads, lovely hidden cafes and antique shops, and you can actually see the skyline across a fair distance. I felt like a little child again, wondering what was around the next corner. I can finally say that Tokyo has some hidden treasures. Including the 20 pound (4,000 yen) traditional Japanese inns, which is why downtown Tokyo has many backpackers and foreigners passing through.

東京の下町を歩いているときに私は３年前に訪れた京都の景色を思い出しました。私の訪れた京都では美しいお寺がいくつも点在し、小さな裏道や小道、隠れ家的存在のカフェやアンティークショップ、そして遠くに地平線までも見ることができたのです。私は小さな子供に戻ったようなわくわくした気分で次の曲がり角の先には何があるだろう、と思いながら歩いていました。ついに私は東京は秘密の宝庫と言えることができるでしょう。一泊２０ポンド（４０００円程度）で泊まれる旅館の存在も東京の下町にたくさんの外国人やバックパッカーの人たちが訪れている理由です。

During my trip through old Tokyo I came across a traditional Japanese style antique house (since 1932), which is in fact an English Tea House. Naturally, I decided to take a tea break. The inside was very beautiful and a lovely mix of Japanese structural design but with English antiques, maps of the London underground, flowers, books, and rabbit toys all around - an authentic British feel indeed. 東京散策の途中、私は伝統的な日本のアンティークハウス（１９３２年に建てられた）を見つけました。その日本家屋は実はイギリスの紅茶専門のカフェでした。当然のことながら、私はそこで少し休憩を取ることにしました。カフェ店内はとても美しく、日本建築のデザインとイギリスのアンティーク用品、ロンドンの地下鉄の地図、花、本棚、うさぎのぬいぐるみなどそこにあるものすべてがうまく調和していました。本物のイギリスの雰囲気がそこにありました。

Downtown Tokyo is a fun and original part of a city which has long lost its unique character and identity. However, within the back streets of downtown Tokyo, the history of Japan's capital city is wonderfully preserved, and glimpses of the old Tokyo before it rose up into mountains of brick and metal are evident within every crack of the pavement.

東京の下町は面白く、そこでは長い間失われているユニークなキャラクターや独自性を待っていた昔の街の姿の一面が見えます。しかし、下町の裏道などにはまだまだ日本の都市の歴史のあとがしっかりと残っています。キャラクターの無いレンガや鉄でできた建物が現れる前の昔の東京を垣間みることは、今ある歩道にできた亀裂すべてをより明らかにしています。
