Omikuji Here in Japan people like to consult an oracle at the shrine, especially on New Year's day. Each person consults one or more froms a selection of oracles. The oracle then tells him/her fortune for the new year.

日本人は神社でおみくじを引くのが好きである。特に元旦などはそれぞれおみくじを引いて新年を占う。

Many years ago, I was working with 12 engineers from the US and UK. We went sightseeing together in Eno-shima. After a couple hours of walking we found a shrine in ahead of us. An American guy said “I wanna consult an oracle (usually Japanese call them an Omikuji)”. Omikuji has six levels of status such as “Great Luck”, “Good Luck”, “Luck”, “Small Luck”, “Misfortune”, “Great Misfortune”. So he made his choice and took a pick, then he asked me to translate what it said for him. His fortune was unfortunately “Misfortune”.

随分前になるが、１２人のアメリカ、イギリスからやってきたエンジニアと仕事をしていたときのことである。ある日皆で江ノ島に遊びに行った。1、２時間歩くとアメリカ人の1人がおみくじを引きたいと言いだした。おみくじには大吉、吉、中吉、小吉、凶、大凶の6角段階がある。そのアメリカ人の彼は決心をしておみくじを一つ引いた。そして、私に見せて訳してくれと言うのだった。しかし、彼のおみくじは「凶」だったのである。

He asked me, “What does it say? What is it saying?” But I could not tell him his Omikuji was “Misfortune”. I was deliberating for a moment to think whether or not I should tell him the truth. Looking on at me and seeing that I was in deep thought, he realized that his Omikuji result was not good. Then he said, “It’s OK. That is the result. So tell me”.

彼はおみくじに何が書いてあるのか訪ねた。しかし、私は彼の引いたおみくじが「凶」であることを告げられず悩んでいると、彼はおみくじが良くなかったことに気がつき、「引いた結果だから、言って」と言う。

I proceeded translate and told him his fortune from the Omikuji. “Waiters: won’t show”, “Lost & found: won’t be found”, “Hopes: hard to come true ”. He suddenly looked down and said “OH..!”, “oh…”, “no..”. At the end he said “OK. It’s good enough!!” That became probably his first and last Omikuji. He really didn’t have his luck that day.

「待ち人来ず」、「捜し物見あたらず」、「願い事叶えるも何多し」を訳していくと、「Oh・・・」としばし落胆してしまった。これが恐らく彼にとって最初で最後のおみくじになったことだろう。彼は本当についていてなかった。
