The most recent debate on many Japanese radio stations was sparked by the film 'それでも、僕はやってない' 'Sore demo, boku wa yattenai’ (I just didn’t do it!) by Masayuki Suo. I just didn’t do it is the first film directed by Masayuki Suo in over 10 years, best known for his 1996 hit "Shall We Dansu?" (Shall We Dance?).

最近日本のラジオ番組では、周防正行監督の「それでも、ボクはやってない」という映画について議論されている。この映画は周防監督が１９９６年の「シャル・ウィ・ダンス？」以来、１０年ぶりの作品である。

The film takes a critical look at how Japanese courts deal with the societal problem of "chikan," (men who use the anonymity of crowded trains to grope women, particularly high-school female students). Very few groping cases are taken to trial because most alleged gropers plead guilty; and the system is often biased against the defendant in such cases.

この映画は「痴漢」（男性が混雑した電車の中で女性、特に女子高生の体を触るというという行為）という社会問題を日本の裁判はどう扱うのか批判的な目で見ている。痴漢行為が裁判にかけられたというケースはとても少ない。というのは、疑いをかけられた男性の殆どは痴漢行為を否定しても、そのようなケースではたいてい被害者の女性に判決が偏ってしまう。

Ryo Kase stars as Teppei Kaneko, a 26-year-old falsely accused of groping while moving around on a crowded train trying to pull his stuck jacket out of a train door. Kaneko is told that there is a 99.9% conviction rate if he goes to trial to defend his innocence. However, if he pleads guilty, he can pay a fine and go free.

加瀬 亮が演じる２６歳の金子徹平は、満員電車のドアに挟まったジャケットをひっぱろうとしてドアのところで手を動かしている時に痴漢の疑いで訴えられた。金子は、「無罪を主張しても99.9%の場合有罪判決が出る、しかし有罪になっても罰金を払えば釈放される」ということを伝えられる。

The film creates anger in its viewers and without all the glamorised music could be easily viewed as a documentary. The photography is very realistic and the movie isn't about any particular character - it is about the flaws of the Japanese system. Which I am told, if judges have too many innocent cases on their file they may be demoted as it would only show to detail that the Japanese law system is not effective.

視聴者はこの映画を見て日本のシステムに対して怒りを感じるだろう。雰囲気の良い音楽などは一切ないドキュメンタリーに近い映画となっている。映像はとても現実的だが、映画自体は特定の人物について描いているのではない。むしろ日本の社会システムの欠点について描いているのだ。私が聞いたところによると、もし裁判官のファイルに無罪のケースが沢山ありすぎると、それは日本の法律のシステムは効力がないことを示すことになり、その裁判官は降職されることもあるという。

It would appear that it is not pick pockets you should be worrying about on crowded trains in Japan - it's chikans! So, how can you protect yourself from a chikan, and for being accussed as one?

日本の満員電車ではスリだけではなく痴漢にも注意しなくてはいけない。ではどうやったら自分を痴漢から守ることができるだろうか。

 

For men:

1. Never board a crowded train if it isn't absolutely necessary

2. Never stand behind a female of any age (if this is not possible, then stand with you back facing towards the female)

3. If you are standing behind a female - make sure you do not start moving to make yourself comfortable no-matter how uncomfortable you are

4. If standing behind a female make sure both hands are holding onto the bars, which would clearly show your hands are not able to wander anywhere else

5. Read a book instead!

男性:

1. 急ぎでなければ満員電車には乗らない。

2.どの年齢であっても、女性の後ろには立たない。

（避けられない場合は女性に背を向けて立つ。）

3.女性の後ろに立つ場合は、体勢が悪くても動いてはいけない。

4. 女性の後ろに立つ場合は、何もできないことを表すために両手をつり皮にかける。

5. 本を読む。

 

For women:

1. Never board a crowded train if it isn't absolutely necessary

2. Be aware of lines, which have a bad reputation for chikans. Such as the Odakyu line and the Saikyo line (in Tokyo)

3. Carry a safety pin in your pocket and stab the perpetrator as hard as you can (yes, we would like to see blood if possible!)

4. Use the 女性専用車両 Josei sen-yo sharyo train carriages. These are special carriages exclusively for women only. There are similar ones for men also. However, restrictions do not apply on weekends and national holidays

5. Scream 'CHIKAN' as loud as possible

女性:

1. 急ぎでなければ満員電車には乗らない。

2. 井の頭線、小田急線など痴漢が多発している路線には注意する。

3. ポケットに防犯ピンをもっておき、痴漢行為をした人を思い切り刺す。

4.女性専用車両を利用する。男性にも同じような車両があるが、週末や祝日には適用されない。

5. 大きな声で「痴漢！」と叫ぶ。

It is true that many passengers pretend to not notice Chikans, so you must take the necessary steps above to protect yourself and not rely on others around you for assistance or an alibi. And most importantly can we please get the Japanese government and education system to have a meeting with regards to changing those ever-so-cute Japanese school uniforms, or at least make it compulsory that female students must wear full-length tights as part of their school uniform.

実際、痴漢を目撃しても気づかないフリをする人はたくさんいる。だから自分を守るためには、アリバイのために周りの人を頼るのではなく、自分で行動しなくてはならない。そして一番重要なのは、日本政府と教育機関とでかわいい日本の制服を変える会議をするか、少なくとも女子生徒には制服の一部としてフルレングスのタイツをはくことを義務付けることだ。
