Fuji-san, the highest mountain in Japan sits West of Tokyo, and is surrounded by five lakes, all of which provide beautiful views of this magnificent piece of nature: Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Sai, Lake Motosu and Lake Shoji. Like the cherry blossom, Fuji-san is an important and sacred symbol of Japan.

日本で一番高い山と言えば、富士山。関東西部にそびえ立つ富士山のふもとには、「富士五湖」と呼ばれる湖たちが取り囲んでいる. 河口湖、山中湖、西湖、本栖湖、精進湖と呼ばれるそれらの湖は、壮大な自然が織りなす美しい景色を私達に見せてくれる。桜が日本の象徴であるように、富士山もまた日本を代表する象徴である。

The view from ascending Fuji-san is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring. If you choose to climb from the early hours of the morning then you can literally go fishing for the stars, which seem like only a stones’ throw away. The resting stations seem close but take forever to get to, constantly undermining your sense of geography.  However, make sure you get plenty of sleep before challenging Fuji-san; otherwise you will find yourself moving around like a robot running on low non-rechargeable batteries.

富士山を登る時に見える景色に、きっとハッとさせられて驚くだろう。早朝から登山に臨むなら、富士山を囲む星たちが手に届いてしまうくらいすぐ近くに見えるはず。所々にある休憩所を目指して進んでも、実際はずっと先にあってなかなかたどり着かないので、自分が今どこにいるのかという感覚さえ鈍ってきてしまう。そうならないために、前日はしっかり睡眠をとって登山に備えておけば問題ないだろう。でないと、使い切りタイプの充電池が消耗したロボットのように思うように体が動かなくなってしまうだろうから。

Climbing Fuji-san is a perfect way to return to nature and clear your thoughts. Make your way up the rocky paths to the main resting station and wait. Then watch the sun climb out from the clouds and send its bronze gleam across the snow-white surfaces. You will be washed over in a moment of pure spiritual and rejuvenating energy. The view before your very eyes cannot be easily dreamed of. There is an ocean of clouds as far as you can see, which in areas are flat and in others rough, as if forming mountaintops. The clouds, tranquil and still, along with the sun climbing at a steady pace bring warmth and joy to all climbers. Being above the clouds, with some drifting through you, is an experience not easily forgotten.

富士山を登ることが自然を肌で感じることができ、さらに心をスッキリさせてくれるだろう。ゴツゴツした小道をひたすら頂上に向かって進んで行き、そこで朝日を待つ。次第に雲の中から朝日が現れ、雪で白く覆われた地面に赤褐色の光が差し込んでくる。その強くギラギラした光景は簡単に夢で見れるものではないはず。空一面に広がる雲は所々平らだったり、デコボコしていたりしていて、まるで山頂をかたどっていくかのようだ。
雲はじっと動かずに、一定の速度で登ってくる太陽をそっと見守りながら、同時に登山者たちに温もりと感動を与えてくれる。また、雲が空をゆっくりと漂う中を太陽がはっきりと顔を出した瞬間、あなたは忘れがたい貴重な経験をすることだろう。

If you manage to reach the peak of Fuji-san, which stands at 3,776 metres (12, 388 feet) above sea level, not only will you feel complete but you will also find a new wave of energy oozing through you. And if you’re feeling hungry you can always buy something from the food hut. The view at top is pretty amusing as you can find people walking around at the summit like lost cats looking for a place to rest.

何とか山頂にたどり着くと、そこは海抜より3776メートル（12388フィート）もの高さにあるので、登山に成功したという単なる達成感だけではなく、また違った気分の高まりが感じられるかもしれない。それとは別に、空腹を満たすため、山頂の休憩所で買って食べることもできる。頂上からの景色はとにかくすばらしく感動する。他の登山者たちは、その感動をしばらく味わおうとまるで道に迷ったネコのようにゆっくり腰をかける場所を探しうろうろしている。

Descending Fuji-san is just as fun as your feet constantly sink into the red and black volcanic pumice, so it is like hopping all the way down. By now the stars would have completely surrendered to the sun, fading away into the lighter shades of blue. The moon tends to play hide and seek with the sun as it skips behind the passing clouds. Look out for the Japanese style gate, and the legendary Aokigahara forest, which sits at the bottom of the mountain.

富士山を下りる時もまた楽しみが待っている。赤や黒色の軽石でできた道を下ると、足がだんだんと沈んでいくので、ぴょんぴょんと跳ねながら下りていくのが楽しい。これまで星たちは完全に太陽を取り囲んでいただろうが、太陽の光ですっかり消えてしまった。また月も太陽とかくれんぼするかのように、流れる雲の背後にすっぽりと隠れてしまった。山のふもとには青木ヶ原と呼ばれる有名な森林地帯があるので、くれぐれも迷い込まないように。

As the great saying goes; ‘Any man who climbs Fuji-san twice, is a fool’, though it is evident to see why people climb Fuji-san more then once. The view is always breathtaking and refreshing, and a spiritual essence hangs in the air. Note: The most safest and popular period to climb Fuji-san is from July 1 to August 27

Fact: Aokigahara Forest is the most popular suicide area in the whole of Japan. Over 77 bodies have been found inside the forest.
