PIMM’S(ピムズ)といえばイギリスの夏の飲み物として知られており、パブなどでもピッチャー入りのピムズwithレモネードのメニューが、夏の間だけ登場する。1860年にロンドンで登場したこのPIMM’Sは、現在も本社をロンドンのマリルボ−ンストリートに構える、正真正銘ロンドン生まれロンドン育ちのお酒。カクテル原液の原料は秘伝のレシピらしく、世界でたった6人しかその原料や製造方法を知らないのだとか。

“PIMM’S” is known as a summer drink in the UK. In pubs, a cocktail of PIMM’S with Lemonade in a pitcher appears on the menu only during summers. PIMM’S first appeared in London in 1860, and has had its headquarters in London till now, therefore it is genuinely “London” drink. It is said the recipe is completely secret and only six people in the world know the recipe and the ingredient of the liqueur.

ピムズのリキュールそのものは、イギリス内のスーパー等で手軽に手に入るので、自宅でも簡単に作って楽しむことができる。レモネード（イギリスのレモネードは日本のような甘いジュースではなく、スプライトなどに似た透明な炭酸飲料）などで3倍に割り、スライスしたオレンジ、ライム、きゅうり、りんごなどを入れてたっぷりの氷を入れるのがスタンダードな飲み方らしいのだが、色々試したところ、個人的には「Schwepps」のレモネードで割って、オレンジと氷のみを入れて飲むのが一番美味しいという結果に落ち着いた。（きゅうりも更にさっぱりとするので美味しいのだけど、日本人からすると、きゅうりを飲み物に入れるということ自体にどうしても抵抗を感じてしまう・・）このピムズのすごいところは、何の料理にでも合ってしまうところ。食前や食後に楽しむのはもちろん、お料理と一緒に飲んでいても、イタリアン、中華、カレー、日本食、何にでも不思議と合ってしまう。

It is possible to buy a bottle of PIMM’S at most supermarkets and off-licenses in UK, so you can make various kind of drinks with PIMM’S by yourself. The standard way is; 1 part PIMM’S with 3 parts lemonade and finish with sliced oranges, limes, cucumbers or apples. I tried some ways, and my favorite was 1 part PIMM’S with 3 parts lemonade of “Schweppes”, and finish only with sliced oranges. I tried with a cucumber and it was actually nice, but I feel awkward to put a sliced cucumber in a drink as we Japanese never use cucumbers for a drink. One of the great points of PIMM’S is that it suits with any type of cuisine. It suits with Italian foods, Chinese foods, Curry, and even with Japanese foods!?

ということで、夏以降、PIMM’S No.1が、ほぼ毎日のように自宅で夕食のお供となっていた私。しかしこのピムズには、夏用のNo.1だけでなく、PIMM’S No.3 Winter Cupという冬季限定バージョンもあるのだ。そもそもPIMM’SにはNo.1-No.6まで６つのバージョンがあり、No.2-No.5までは発売中止になっていたのだが、去年からNo.3が冬季限定で「ウィンターバージョン」として復刻し、今年も10月から発売開始された。

Therefore, I had enjoyed PIMM’S with my dinner at home almost everyday since summer. However, PIMM’S is not only for summer drink! In fact, it has a winter version called “PIMM’S NO.3 Winter Cup”. Originally, PIMM’S has six versions from NO.1 to No.6. NO.2-NO.5 had been stopped to produce but No.3 was reborn last year as a winter limited version “Winter Cup”. ?Also this year, it was released in October again.?

夏のピムズ「PIMM’S No.1」にすっかりはまっていた私は、冬季バージョンも試してみたくて色々な店をまわったのだが、なかなか置いていない。小さなオフライセンスやスーパーでは見つからず、カムデンタウン駅前の巨大Sainsburyでやっと”PIMM’S No.3　Winter Cup”を手にいれることができた。

For I was nuts about the summer version “PIMM’S NO.1”, of course I wanted to try the winter version as well. Unlike PIMM’S NO.1, it was very hard to find the PIMM’S No.3 at ordinary supermarkets and off-licenses. Finally I found it at the huge Sainsbury in Camden town.

家に帰り、早速夏のピムズと同じ方法で試してみた。Schweppesのレモネードとオレンジとアイス、一口飲んでみると　少しこってりとして甘みが多い感じ。さっぱりとしたPIMM’S No.1が夏のカクテルだとしたら、このNo.3はまさに冬にぴったり。（ちなみにNo.3はブランデーベースなのだそうだ。納得。）

The night, I tried it in the same way as the summer version with Schweppes, sliced oranges and ice cubes. It was a bit sweeter than the summer version and it has a rich taste. While the PIMM’S No.1 suits for summer cocktails, this No.3 is perfect for winter!??

ボトルに添付されていた「おすすめの飲み方」には、伝統的なレモネード割りの他に、りんごジュースと合わせて温めて飲むという方法が書いてあった。ホットピムズ！日本酒も、夏は冷酒、冬は熱燗と季節によって楽しみ方を変えることができるけれども、ちょうどそれと似た感覚なのかもしれない。りんごを入れたホットピムズ、早速試してみたのだが、ほっこりと体が温まって寒い夜にはやはり最適。

According to the card attached to the bottle, the best way for the winter PIMM’S is to drink with warmed apple juices. Hot PIMM’S!! We Japanese also have some ways of drinking SAKE; REISHU for summer and ATSUKAN for winter, so it would be similar to that. I also tried the hot PIMM’S with apple juices, and I thought it must be best in cold winter nights as it gently warms the body.

PIMM’S No.1はイギリスでは年間通してスーパーマーケットやオフライセンスで12ポンド前後で購入することができ、PIMM’S No.3は冬季限定でイギリスの大手のスーパーなどでNo.1と同じ位の価格で購入できる。日本でもPIMM’S No.1に関しては、楽天などのネットショップで全く同じ商品が購入できるようだ（しかも何故か本場イギリスよりも低価格で！）。イギリスの夏と冬の風物詩、是非お試しを！

PIMM’S NO.1 is available for purchase at supermarkets and off-licenses around for 12 pounds in the UK, and No.3 is available at large supermarkets for the similar price as the No.1. Also in Japan, it is available at RAKUTEN and some of the other web-shops for cheaper price than the UK! Try out the British traditional summer and winter drinks!!
