クラシック音楽のコンサート、というと皆さんはどのようなイメージを抱いているだろうか。「退屈」「つまらない」「高い」「眠い」「敷居が高い」「椅子に座りっぱなしで疲れる」などなど、かなりネガティブなイメージを抱いている方も多いかもしれない。しかしそんな偏見を一気にくつがえすようなクラシックコンサートシリーズがあるとしたら・・・？

What kind of images do you have towards classical music concerts? Some of you might have quite negative images of those, like 'Boring', 'expensive', 'sleepy', 'too posh', 'confined to a small seat for a long time' and so on. However, in London there is a series of classical concert series which could overturn those fixed prejudices.

毎年、夏の時期に８週間に渡って連日ロンドンのRoyal Albert Hallを中心に行われるＢＢＣ主催のＰＲＯＭＳ(BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts)は、1850年に、「普段クラシックのコンサートには行かない人達にももっと気軽にクラシックを！」というコンセプトのもとに開始された伝統ある音楽祭である。毎年世界中からクラシックのトップアーティスト達が演奏に訪れ、会場も連日ほぼ満員の観客で埋まり、コンサートの模様もＢＢＣはじめ世界中の放送局で放映される。

PROMS (BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts) is an 8 week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts held annually in central London mainly at Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington. It was founded in 1895 by Robert Newman who aimed to introduce classical music to people who were not familiar with classical music. Every year, world-famous classical music artists are involved in the series of concerts, and the hall is always filled with capacity audience. Also, they are broadcasted by BBC and the other broadcast stations all over the world.

このコンサートシリーズ、一体何が日本の通常のクラシックコンサートと異なるかというと、まずはチケットの値段と座席体系である。普通の座席もかなり安めの価格設定なのだが、何より当日売り出される舞台正面立ち見席の「アリーナ席」と最上階回廊「ギャラリー席」は、なんと5ポンドで当日発売される。これだけの一流の演奏が5ポンド（約1000円）で生で聴けるというのは日本では殆ど有り得ないことだ。毎日コンサート開始２，３時間前から、この格安当日席を求めて会場には長蛇の列ができている。列には、決していかにもクラシックに行きそうなドレスやスーツの紳士淑女だけでなく、Ｇパンやキャミソール姿の若者や家族連れ、おおよそクラシックなんか聞かないだろうと思えるような見かけのロックな格好をしたお兄ちゃんなど、本当に様々な客層だ。

The two biggest differences between PROMS and the other ordinary classical concerts are the price of the tickets and the seating plan. The prices of each grade of seats are quite cheap compared to the other classical concerts, but especially the 'Arena' tickets, which are for the large standing area right in front of the stage, and the 'Gallery' tickets which are for the gallery on the top floor or the hall are even cheaper than those prices, and it is just £5 pounds. In Japan, it is almost impossible to find tickets for concerts in which such top artists from around the world at such a cheap price. From 2-3 hours before each concert of PROMS, you can find a long queue of people for the day tickets outside of Royal Albert Hall. You would be amazed that there are various kinds of people in the queue. Actually, the audience of PROMS is quite diverse and there are not only gentlemen and ladies in suits and dresses but also young girls in camisoles and jeans and even young guys of a punky style.

そして、この格安席の一つ「ギャラリー席」は、客席最上階の回廊部分を開放したもので、写真のように、皆シートを広げてごろ寝したり、まるでピクニック気分でお弁当を食べたり、思い思いの格好でリラックスして音楽に聞き入っている。中には壁に寄りかかって人気パズル「ＳＵＤＯＫＵ」に夢中になっている人までいるし、カップルが仲良く寄り添って寝転がり毛布にくるまって音楽に浸っている姿もみかける。椅子にしばりつけられて音楽を「聴かされる」だけではない、一番リラックスした音楽本来の聴き方が、そこには存在しているのかもしれない。

In the areas for 'Gallery' tickets, some people are spreading their mats which they brought from home and lying spread-eagled on the mats. Other people open their lunchboxes and having their lunch or dinner listening to the music. It looks like a picnic site rather than a classical concert! I have also found a man who was concentrating on 'SUDOKU' leaning on the wall and some couples cuddling up in their blankets. It may be said that this is the original true form of listening to music, which is not 'forced' to listen in a small seat.

中でも一番のクライマックスは、音楽祭最終日のプロムスラストナイト。この日は、思い思いの仮装をしたり民族衣装を身にまとったり、英国国旗はじめ出身国の国旗などを持参した5000人以上の観客達が会場に集まってくる。最終日のプログラムは、前半はトップクラシックアーティスト達によるソロやコンチェルト、オーケストラ曲などにはじまり、後半は英国国歌やロンドンデリーなど毎年決まったプロムスならではの名曲の数々が続く。観客は、もはやただ音楽を受身的に「聴いている」だけではなく、オーケストラの演奏に合わせて、それぞれ持参した笛を吹き鳴らしたり、手拍子や足踏み、ダンス、などなど、大変なお祭り騒ぎだ。中でも、日本人英国人誰でも耳にしたことのある、あのエルガーの「威風堂々」をフルオーケストラと会場の5000人以上の観客皆で大合唱する瞬間は、あまりの興奮と感動に体中鳥肌が立ち涙が溢れそうになる、一生に一回できるかどうかという位の感動の瞬間だ。 

The climax of the series is the 'Proms Last Night', which simultaneously takes place at 5 venues in UK on the last day of the festival. On this day, over 30,000 people (5,000-6,000 people for each venue) gather to the halls in masquerade holding union jacks and other national flags of their own countries. The first half of the programme consists of some performances of concertos, solos and symphonies by famous artists, and when it comes to the latter half, it suddenly changed into the festivities. The Audience starts to clap their hands, sing, dance and whistle together with the famous British traditional classical tunes like Jerusalem, The National Anthem and Londonderry Air. Especially, it is an unbelievably thrilling moment when over 5,000 people from the audience sing the Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance March' altogether with full-orchestra.

クラシック音楽の衰退の危機が叫ばれている今、世界各国で、現代のエッセンスを含んだ様々な工夫による新しい形のクラシックコンサートも増えている。もちろんそのような試みも大切なことだが、ここイギリスには、従来のクラシックコンサートの醍醐味や伝統を保ちながら、今なお、広い層の老若男女に大きな感動と興奮を毎年与え続けているコンサートが、確かに存在しているのだ。

Nowadays, it is said that less and less people go to classical concerts, and classical music is almost endangered. In an attempt to stem it, some people and organisations are giving new type of classical concerts, which would go down well with young people. Of course these kind of attempts would be very important, however, the true 'classical' concerts - which are exciting and thrilling but still keeping traditional - are surely still in existence here in the U.K
