From the director of the world famous anime ‘Akira’, Katsuhiro Otomo brings forth Steamboy. A high tempo retro science-fiction adventure set in 1860’s Victorian England, Steamboy is a wonderful adventure that can be watched by the whole family. The animation is nothing less than remarkable and perhaps the best ever created, and should be considering it is the most expensive Japanese anime movie ever made, and took Otomo around ten years to make.
世界的に有名なアニメ「AKIRA」のディレクター大友克洋が「スチームボーイ」を世に生み出した。設定は１８６０年代のイングランド。家族皆で楽しく見られる、ハイテンポでレトロなＳＦアドベンチャー。このアニメはおそらく今までで最高の注目すべきアニメ映画だろう。というのも、このアニメの製作費用は今までに作られたものの中でも一番高く、大友監督は製作するのに約１０年も費やしたのだ。
A young boy named Ray Steam the protagonist, whose character resembles that of ‘Tetsuo’ from ‘Akira’, is stuck between two opposite ideologies of science, and has to protect a mysterious metal steam ball, which has a revolutionary power to change history. Ray uses this power to fight evil whilst at the same time tries to save London from destruction.
主人公は「AKIRA」に出てくるテツオに似た、レイという発明好きな若い少年。レイは二つの対極した科学に対する理想の間に挟まれ、謎の金属ボールを守ろうとする。そのボールは歴史を変えるほどの革命的なエネルギーを持っていた。レイはこの力で悪と戦い、ロンドンを崩壊から救おうとする。大友はイギリス人の心とキャラクターを映画の中で完璧に捉えて描いており、動作以上のものを伝えている。
Otomo depicts and captures the British psyche and character perfectly in a film that delivers soo much more than just action. The British (Manchester and London) accents are authentic and add great richness to the movie. Steamboy’s storyline is simplistic, humorous and thought-provocative. Towards the end of the film, Otomo’s giant mushroom cloud of steam turns into an ice flower to deliver a perfect symbolisation for a ‘cold war’.
イギリス英語（マンチェスターとロンドン）のアクセントも本物で、映画を更に鮮やかなものにしている。「スチームボーイ」のあらすじはシンプルかつユーモラスで、示唆に富んでいる。映画の終わりに向かい、大友の蒸気の巨大なきのこ雲は「冷戦」の象徴化を伝えるの氷の花になる。
A must see anime movie that will greatly please both an English and Japanese audience.
「スチームボーイ」はイギリスと日本両方の視聴者を大いに楽しませる必見のアニメ映画だ。
Antique [Western Cake Store]
ドラマ「アンティーク - 西洋骨董洋菓子店-」 Review by Barry Crisp
This is a light-hearted TV series comedy about four men of different generations who work in an antique confectionary. This truly unique and fascinating store, which is located in an ordinary residential area, becomes a hub of melting emotions for love, determination, family life and friendship. Everybody who frequents the store has a story of their own to tell as well as the four handsome men that work there.
西洋骨董洋菓子店で働く四人の男達を描いた、軽快なコメディ。なんの変哲もないごく普通の住宅街の一角にある、とてもユニークで魅力的なこの店は、次第に、愛、決断、家族の人生や友情など、様々な感情が溶け合う場所となっていく。この店で働く4人の色男達と同様、この店の常連客たちは皆、それぞれ違った彼ら自身のストーリーを背負っている。
Tachibana Keiichiro (Shiina Kippei) is the owner with a troubled past; Ono Yusuke (Fujiki Naohito) is the skilled master baker that has a mystifying and magnetising aura; Kanda Eiji (Takizawa Hideaki), the main protagonist and ex-boxer who adores cakes, is an apprentice and waiter at 'Antique'; and lastly Kobayakawa Chikage (Abe Hiroshi) is childhood bodyguard of Tachibana and waiter at Antique.
橘圭一郎（椎名桔平）は複雑な過去を背負った店のオーナー、小野裕介（藤木直人）は神秘的で人を惹きつけるオーラを持つ天才パティシエ、主役の神田エイジ（滝沢秀明）は、ケーキが大好きな元ボクサーで、アンティークのウェイターをしながらパティシエの見習いをしている。最後の一人、小早川千影（阿部寛）は、幼少期から橘のボディーガードをしており、アンティークのウェイターとして働いている。
Based on the short story ‘Seiyou Kottou Yougashiten’, by Fumi Yoshinaga, Antique also features ‘Koyuki’ as Izuka Momoko, a sports reporter undercover. Supported by the lovely theme song ‘Youthful Days’ by Mr. Children, Antique will make you roll around in laughter at most times, and have you sobbing at others. A series definitely not to be missed!

原作は、よしながふみによる漫画『西洋骨董洋菓子店』。ドラマでは他にも、スポーツ新聞の秘密記者、飯塚桃子役として、小雪も出演している。Mr.Childrenの歌う素晴らしいテーマソング「Youthful Days」の効果にも支えられ、ドラマ「アンティーク」は観ている者を笑いの渦に巻き込み、そして時にはほろりと涙させる。必見のドラマシリーズである。

マイファミリー/ My Family Review by Sayaka Matsumoto
数あるイギリスのドラマシリーズの中の傑作のひとつは、BBCで大ヒットとなったドラマシリーズ「My Family」だろう。テレビではシリーズ６が終わったところだが、過去のシリーズのDVDに関しては、アマゾンなどで低価格で購入することができる。
Among various British TV-dramas, one of the best must be “My Family” series which have been broadcasted on BBC since 2000. Series 6 has just finished, but you can get DVDs of previous series on amazon.co.uk or other websites at a competitive price.
歯科医の父親Ben、世界一料理の下手な母親Susan、大ボケだけどどこか憎めない長男Nick、今時のティーンネイジャー長女Janey、そしてこのドタバタな家族を一番冷静に見つめる優等生の末っ子Michaelくん、この5人家族が繰り広げるドタバタコメディドラマ。この5人全員の演技がまた素晴らしい。特にアホ兄を演じるクリス・マーシャルの演技（素？！）は必見。彼はこの役でブリティッシュコメディアワードも受賞している。
A Dentist, Ben, and Susan who is the worst cook in the world are suffering from their three children; a stupid but a lovable brother, Nick, a typical teenager girl, Janey, and a “too” smart young boy, Michael. Each of the actors and actresses are great, especially the acting of Chris Marshall who acts the role of the stupid older brother is fantastic (he received the British Comedy Award for this role).
シットコム（シチュエーションコメディ）は日本人には違和感を感じてしまうことも多いが、このドラマは非常に分かりやすい展開で、英語もクリアで分かりやすく、英語の勉強に最適なだけでなく、まるでイギリスの賑やかな現代家庭にホームステイをしている気分になれる。随所にイギリスならではのネタ要素も盛り込まれており、ああやっぱりイギリスっていいなぁと改めて思ってしまう。
Sitcoms (Situation Comedies) sometimes seem slightly unnatural and strange to Japanese people, but as for this drama, the story is well-organised, and their English is very clear and easy to understand for Japanese people as well. You may feel as if you are having a homestay at a British Family. Also, it’s full of amusing “British” jokes.
イギリスファミリーのホームステイバーチャル体験をしてみたい日本人の方々にはもちろん、アメリカドラマだけにすっかりはまってしまっているイギリス人の方々にも是非おすすめ！
It is worth watching not only for Japanese people who wish to have a virtual homestay at British family, but also for British people who are hooked only on the American dramas!
